There are a few things a homeowner needs to do to prepare for having exterior painting done. First, paint colors must be chosen. On most houses, one primary color is used for the main portion and up to two colors on the trim work. Gingerbread homes and other unique styles may have more than two trim colors for their house painting. An accent color can be used on the front door. If the home has natural wood, a stain and varnish or sealant will need to be chosen.

To decide on colors for exterior painting, consider the colors used on other homes in the neighborhood. Be in tune to themes, like the pastel homes of a seaside community or the earth tone colors often used on stone and log homes, Also try to match paint selections to existing brick. Drive around local neighborhoods to find homes with brick similar to yours, and determine which color combinations appeal to you. The professionals at home improvement stores and an experienced contractor can offer good advice. Colors often look different on paint swatches than they look applied to a surface, so request that your contractor paint a small area for you to approve before he purchases a large quantity of paint. Keep in mind that paint darkens as it dries.

Prepare your property for house painting. Shrubbery and trees that would get in the way of the paint crew should be trimmed. If they interfere with painting, the contractor may have to trim them, and paint contractors are not gardeners. The results may not be appealing. Also make sure the contractor knows which water source and electrical outlets to use. Young children and pets should always be kept away from the crew and contained for the duration of the project.
