Choosing a Paint Contractor
Read about the best ways to choose a paint contractor.
The best way to find a contractor is through referral. If a friend, neighbor, or relative had a positive experience with a paint contractor, you likely will too. Find three contractors you'd like to work with, and have them come to your home to make a professional bid on the project. Hiring a contractor with the middle or highest bid is a good house painting tip because they will probably use premium products and take the time to provide quality work.
Ask your paint contractor how long his company has been in business, and request references. One important consideration is your comfort level with the contractor and his staff. If you feel the contractor lacks integrity or professionalism, it may be time to get a few more bids.
Another house painting tip, check each item on the bid with the paint contractor to ensure that you understand which areas will be painted, how many coats will be used, what type of paint he'll use, and any other concerns you have for your partiular project. Be sure to ask about the hours the contractor's staff will be at your home and the estimated completion date. Always add a day or two for unforseen problems.
For residential work, a contractor may request up to a 50% deposit. This deposit is used to purchase supplies and establish trust between the client and the contractor. Have the contractor provide an itemized bid, in writing, and a receipt for your deposit.
Some companies work with contracts, but not all do. Establish the understanding that your final payment will be issued after you have gone through the house and checked off all items listed on the bid.
