Sponge Painting Instructions

Turn your plain wall into a work of art by using a natural sponge to create a lasting and interesting texture. Sponge painting is not only easy to accomplish, but it is also a fun painting project for the entire family. Furthermore, sponge painting is extremely affordable as all it requires is paint and a sponge.

To begin, spend some time looking at the work of others who attempted to sponge paint their walls. Notice variations of texture, color, and style. You may notice some walls have too much texture, while some look unfinished. In addition, while many sponge painters only use a base color and then apply a different color as their top coat, others choose a more dynamic approach and combine multiple layers of color to add depth to their painting. You will also want to ask friends and family members if they have ever sponge painted before. While it is not a very difficult project, learning the experiences of others will help you avoid making their same mistakes.

Materials

After you have a clear idea of what you want your wall to look like, it is time to buy some necessary supplies for this project. While you may have most of these items already, you will need:

  • Paint/Glaze:  You will need at least two colors for this project, one color for the base coat and the other color for the top coat. Of course, as previously stated, you can experiment by adding a new color to each layer. However, beginners may want to stick with only two neutral colors at first. In addition, for the top coat you will want to buy a glaze and then mix one part color to three parts glaze. It is important to note that if you use latex paint, you need a latex glaze.
  • Brushes:  You will need either a traditional paintbrush or a roller to apply the base coat.
  • Sponge:  While it is acceptable to use a synthetic sponge for this project, it is best to use a natural sponge. Natural sponges have a more interesting texture than synthetic sponges do and will give your painting more depth and style. It may also be wise to purchase a few sizes and styles of natural sponges to add even more variation to your painting.
  • Additional materials:  You will also need painting supplies such as a drop cloth, gloves, goggles, painters tape, a paint tray, and a paint stick for this project.
Instructions

Step 1:  The first step in this project is to paint the base coat. Apply evenly and then  allow ample time for it to dry.

Step 2:  When the base coat dries, mix the glaze and practice your sponge painting technique on a spare piece of cardboard to avoid making mistakes on your wall. After you feel confident, you are ready to begin. Ring out the sponge, dip it gently in the glaze mixture, and begin applying it to the wall. Start in the upper corner of the wall and work your way down. The best way to sponge paint is to create random patches. Do this by rotating the sponge as you apply the paint as well as by painting some sections of the wall with more paint than others areas have.

Step 3:  Another method of sponge painting is to paint over the entire base coat with the glaze mixture and then use a clean, damp sponge to remove parts of the glaze to allow parts of the base coat to appear.

Step 4:  After the top coat dries completely, you may want to add additional layers of either the same color or another complimentary color. This will give your wall even more depth and texture.
